It’s very exciting when you write your first posts to receive comments back from total strangers. Unfortunately the majority of comments will be spam. If they say things like, “I enjoyed your post” or “Thanks for discussing this. I agree”, then you can be fairly sure the sender is automated spam.
Why would they do this? As soon as you approve a comment, the person who made the comment now has their own link on your blog. Getting links increases their own popularity. But it doesn’t do anything for you.
Posts allow readers to comment. But we recommend you check the box on your Discussion page (found under Settings at the bottom of the main menu) that says “An administrator must always approve the comment”. That way you’ll receive an email when someone comments on a post. You can login and read what they have to say before you approve it.
Before approving a comment, you can link to the sender’s website or inspect the email address of the sender. In many cases, you’ll find that the website is an advertising site, like makemeprettygirl.com or info@buyyourselfdigitalcamera.com.
