Your first video

The easiest way to add a video to your post or page is to put your videos on YouTube then copy and paste their embed code onto your own page. YouTube does a great job compressing video. Sign up for an account on their homepage, then follow their directions to upload your videos.

Once your videos are online, go to the YouTube pages where each video appears. Follow these steps in brief, or see below for more details.

1. Click Share.

2. Click Embed.

3. Choose a width or type the custom width.

4. Remove the checkmark from the “suggested videos” box.

5. Copy the code.

Go to your webpage, open the html view, and paste the code. You won’t see the video, but you can preview the page. You would have to logout and look at your site like a visitor to see how it really looks.

More detailed version:

1. Click the word “SHARE” under the video.

2. Click “EMBED”.

3. Select a size from one of the defaults or type your own. The ideal size is the width of the column of your Post or Page. The maximum width of a two column WordPress template is usually 640-650 pixels. Most videos look best between 475-550 pixels wide. If you want a size that isn’t one of the default sizes offered, type your own width in the custom area. (Don’t change the height – just type the width).

4. You can remove the chekmark so suggested videos won’t show on your webpage after visitors play your video.

5. Copy the html code shown in the area marked #4. The code is now in your computer’s memory.

In your post, select HTML as your editing view. Paste the code into the post and update. Check “Preview” to see if it uploaded properly.
