Top 10 WordPress tips

New to WordPress? The top 10 things you should know!

1. Posts appear only in the Blog section. When you write a new Post, it automatically gets added to the Blog section.

2. Posts automatically go into the Archives by month. You don’t have to do anything – they just add themselves.

3. Posts are listed in chronological order with the most recent one at the top of the list. To change the order, just change the date. Open a post and look at the top right area of the screen where you will see the date. Change the date, save the post, and the post will automatically change order.

4. You don’t need Categories for your Posts until you write a lot of posts. Once you’re written a lot of posts, you could sort them into topics so your readers can find them more easily.

5. Tags are for search engines. They are NOT for people to search for topics on your site. People search for topics using either the Search box or Categories. If you want good results on Google, do your tags through an SEO plugin like Headspace.

6. Pages appear in the main menu or main menu drop-downs. New pages do not necessarily show up in the site’s menu until they are added to the menu. Depending on how your menu is built, adding page titles to the menu is a often a second step after the page is made. To add a page to the menu, you may have to access Appearance/Menu. If you don’t see Appearance listed in the left side menu, ask your developer.

7. ALL of the images and PDFs you upload end up in the Media Library. Open the Media Library to see them. If you plan to add hundreds of images, it’s good practice to title each one when you upload it. Then you can use the Search function in the Media Library when you need to find it again.

8. You probably can’t change the footer unless you can program a widget. Ask your developer for changes to the footer.

9. If you want to insert photos in text articles, you can choose one of three sizes – thumbnail, medium or large. Never insert an image on a page that has a gallery plugin. Simply browse for it, upload it and save it. Don’t touch sizes or insert it.

10. If your site has a gallery plugin, you CANNOT choose the size of images you insert. The size is set by the gallery plugin.
