- Sample QR code
QR codes are square bar codes containing information that can be read by a mobile phone, iPhone or Blackberry. The mobile phone needs to have a QR reader, which is downloaded free as an app. Two apps we like are i-nigma and ScanLife.
The QR information usually leads to a website or blog address. For example, the code shown here links to the url www.kitsmedia.ca/mobi after the image is scanned. The url is a one-page “site” we have created and optimized just for mobile visitors. It includes a few links to samples of our work as well as a couple of quizzes on our blog.
The idea behind a QR code is that the url you offer provides something of interest and value to your visitors. It is not considered good manners to simply provide a link to your regular website, unless your homepage has been optmized for mobile devices. In addition, the QR code generally offers something useful to visitors — such as a discount coupon, a teaser video, Mapquest directions to your shop, quiz, survey, photos or other items that can be quickly viewed and absorbed by a mobile user.
We offer small packages like the QR link seen to the right starting at $300. We provide a QR code for you to reproduce on a business card, brochure, advertising, sandwich board or anywhere else you would use print media to draw attention to your business. The actual url can be updated or changed anytime. The idea is that the QR code stays the same, but you can change the contents of what viewers see.
Ideas for using a QR-optimized url:
∙ print the code on your business card or brochure as an option to your domain name
∙ use it to advertise a daily special
∙ use it to highlight features of your business
∙ show a video about your business
∙ create a large version of the QR code for a sandwich board or exterior sign on your building
∙ offer links to Facebook, Vimeo, Youtube, Flickr and other sites where more content is stored
∙ offer a quiz or do a survey
∙ provide an inside look at otherwise “hidden” features of your business
∙ poll your users on a topic
∙ offer a coupon code available only to mobile users
∙ sell something through Paypal or Ebay
